The Amsterdam Singel Centre is in De Geelvinck, a building on Singel, the city's innermost canal. It is right on the waterfront, surrounded on two sides by the water, and near to the famous flower market. Many large multinational financial institutions have their HQs locally, as well as chemicals companies, electronics and electrical appliances firms, and companies making a variety of consumer goods. The city has two well-respected research universities one of which, the University of Amsterdam, is part of a pan European organisation working to develop Europe's standing in the world knowledge economy. The city also has an art school, continuing its long-standing tradition as a hothouse for painters and ceramics artists, and many world-class galleries and museums.
